Acupuncture and Counseling for Depression (ACUDep)
This research project has been based primarily at the Department of Health Sciences at the University of York. We started in the early 2000s with a small study which was an uncontrolled case series of 10 patients (MacPherson et al 2004). A second study developed an acupuncture treatment protocol (MacPherson & Schroer 2007).[Abstract] Subsequently, we conducted a 40 patient pilot to explore features required for design and implementation of a full-scale randomised controlled trial of acupuncture for depression. (Schroer & MacPherson 2009).[Full text]
In April 2009 a National Institute for Health Research Programme Grant for Applied Research of £1,300,000 was awarded to Hugh MacPherson at the University of York, and this programme of research included funding for a trial of acupuncture and counselling for depression. The results of this randomised controlled trial showed that both acupuncture and counselling are associated with patient benefits (MacPherson et al 2013)[Free full text] as well as being cost-effective (Spackman et al 2014). Several sub-studies have explored other aspects of acupuncture as a treatment for depression (see right hand panel). In addition, a Cochrane systematic review of the evidence on acupuncture for depression has been conducted (Smith et al 2010)[Abstract] and re-analysed subsequently with updated trial data.(Armour et al 2019) |
